The answer depends on your financial timetable. Right now, with inflation still above target, high loan rates, an economic slowdown that's becoming more and more perceptible, and Baby Boomers looking to part with their works of art now that they're retired and move into smaller apartments... it's easy to understand why art prices are tending to drop significantly.
If you have significant sums of money at your disposal and your sales timetable remains medium to long-term, you may be able to acquire works of art at a reduced price due to the low demand and high supply on the market. Millennials don't seem to be active on the market yet, as they tend to settle in much more slowly than previous generations. They tend to acquire more contemporary works, and have no intention yet of considering art as an investment vehicle. However, they are likely to join the art market within the next 10 years.
The recommendation of many of the experts consulted is therefore aimed at people who have liquid sums at their disposal that do not have to be recovered before the next decade. Opt for sure values, particularly artists whose estates remain active and concerned with maintaining the value of their works. You may be able to acquire paintings for a fraction of the original purchase price from sellers who wish to recoup even a portion of their investment.
However, buying paintings purely for speculation could prove disappointing in the long run. First and foremost, you should choose an art object for the pleasure of owning and exhibiting it. It's also better to invest a larger sum and acquire fewer works that are more expensive, but which will retain their initial value or increase in value over the next 10 years.
And finally, don't hesitate to use the services of appraisal experts before completing your purchase. Some works of art are plagiarized, difficult to detect and often ignored by their owners who are acting in good faith.
So it's a good time to buy, but remain cautious and above all... patient for the next decade.
